3Lateral and Epic Games Digital Humans

In February 2018 I travelled to Novi Sad, Serbia with Epic Games to record Andy Serkis' performance at 3Lateral - a leading facial capture and digital human/character company.

The project was to create a showcase for 3Lateral's Meta Human Framework using Unreal Engine to be shown at the Game Developers Conference.

In essence, a human performance can be captured and the facial data used on character models, including human faces, and edited in real time. The end results are stunning, watch the videos for a more in depth explanation and demonstration of the technologies.

From a sound recording perspective I was not able to mount the lav mic on a cap or facial rig as I would usually do for facial capture due to these areas being captured as data - see the detail in Digital Andy's hair! Instead, the lav was in the centre of the chest as close to the data cut off point.

Sound Devices 633 on recording duty, Cos11D lav mic with lectrosonics wireless which handled the wide dynamics of the performance from whispering to shouting beautifully.
