ABOUT

In short......

I am a freelance production sound mixer and sound recordist based in London, UK  - working within the film and TV industry on scripted feature and drama, documentary, entertainment, motion capture, commercial / branded content and corporate productions.

The longer story......

My passion for audio recording began at an early age when I started high school in 1994. When I arrived the music department had a 4 track cassette Tascam portastudio and within a year due to a windfall of funds and some not so gentle persuasion from myself the department had evolved into a full studio with 24 track mixing desk, 2 x 8 track ADAT recorders, range of microphones, Cubase MIDI editor and live room with full backline.

Owen Spencer Production Sound Mixer

I found myself immersed in the studio throughout my high school years, experimenting with recording techniques, ferociously reading manuals and textbooks and becoming the non official school engineer - I had found my place.

I studied Music Technology A Level from ages 16-18 and continued study at Staffordshire University gaining a 1st Class with Hons BSc. At university I took a year off from studies before my final year to manage the 7 recording studios at the school where I helped implement Pro Tools into the workflow.

After university I began a career as an audio editor for commercial production, at first in Birmingham and then in London until becoming freelance in 2009. At this time I was becoming more interested in location recording especially for film and TV and took courses at London Film School and Pinewood Studios. I began to build my own recording setup and pitch for jobs, building a portfolio and client base. As the jobs grew I invested in more equipment which generated more work and then more equipment investment.. to date I own two professional specification location recording setups for either bag or cart work (see equipment).

I fuse technicality and creativity in my approach to recording and have experienced a wide range of challenging locations - from safari in Kruger park South Africa to the victorian sewers in Brighton. If you a producer / production manager I would be delighted to speak with you about your location sound recording requirements for your future projects - contact info here
